Portree

Portree
Our journey starts and finishes in Portree

Our journey starts and finishes in Portree, a bustling fishing port and cultural centre which counts itself as the largest town on Skye. Your guide will meet you as you get off your tender boat and will direct you to the coach, which will be situated approximately 5 minutes away by foot.

Old Man of Storr

Old Man of Storr
Just 10 minutes into tour we hit an other-worldly landscape fashioned by volcanic activity millions of years ago fashing by volcanic activity millions of years ago.

Our first stop gives you a chance to admire the unique rock formations including the Old Man of Storr, a 50 metre high rock pinnacle which juts out from the awe-inspiring Trotternish Ridge.

Kilt Rock

Kilt Rock
Our next stop is Kilt Rock; an exposed sea cliff which resembles the traditional Highland kilt.

Kilt rock wows our guests each and every time, and is often our most popular stop of the day. It also boasts a waterfall that tumbles 60 metres (180 feet) into the Sound of Raasay below – a truly enthralling sight, and one made even more special when the wind blows the waterfall back up the cliff!

The Quiraing

The Quiraing
Our next stop is certainly one of the highlights on Skye and our absolute favourite stop!

You may recognise this landscape from films such as Stardust and Prometheus, plus many others too! The Quiraing is a series of landslips that have combined to form awe-inspiring scenery. When mist swirls around the volcanic rock it creates an almost surreal experience and, on clear days, the views are amazing. You will have plenty of time to explore and, if you are feeling fit, you may wish to go for a short hike.  Whether you stay close to the mini-coach ,or head out to find your very own tranquil spot of Skye wilderness, the views are incredible!

Cuillin Mountains

Cuillin Mountains
Our journey around Skye culminates in one of the best viewpoints in the whole country, that of the Cuillin Mountains

Here there is an opportunity to go on an off-the-beaten-track hike with the guide to one of our favourite spots on the island, or perhaps you’d rather relax with a locally crafted whisky or ale in Seamus’s Bar, which has views to die for!

Tour FAQs

What date/ships will this tour run from?+

2022 dates

18th July – Carnival Pride – 0930 – 1430

26th July – Carnival Pride – 1030 – 1530

14th August – Carnival Pride – 1030 – 1530

23rd August – MS Volendam – 1030 – 1530

If you do not see your ship listed above, please contact us and we will most likely be happy to schedule a tour for you.

What size of vehicle do you use?+

We have two well-appointed 28/30 seater mini-coaches with panoramic windows, comfortable reclining seats, USB charging points and AC. You can rest assured that you will be able to relax and enjoy the majestic scenery in complete comfort and, with our smaller group size, you are guaranteed a more personal experience.

We may occasionally use our smaller 16-seater luxury mini-coach. This is the ultimate in luxury, even featuring a glass roof! If you have a private group please contact us as we may be able to offer you a tour on this smaller vehicle.

Can children come on this tour?+

Yes – children are welcome on our shore tours. Please note that you must purchase a ticket for every child as, even if they sit on a parent’s lap, they officially take up one space on the coach.

Is this tour suitable for disabled passengers?+

Portree is a tender port. The parking at the port is extremely limited and there is no possibility for private operators to pick up/drop off there so we require to park in Somerled Square, in the centre of Portree. To get to our bus you require to walk uphill for around 10 minutes/0.2 miles. Consequently, if you have limited mobility, please contact us to discuss this and we will be happy to advise on the suitability of this short walk for you.

This tour is focused on enjoying the world-class scenery on Skye, all of which is outdoors. At a number of our stops the ground can be uneven, muddy and wet. However, you are welcome to stay on or near to the mini-coach at all times, and this will not impact on your enjoyment of the day.

Please note that we cannot transport mobility scooters on any of our coaches, due to limited boot/trunk space.

What are the arrangements for lunch?+

The arrangements and prices for 2022 are still to be confirmed but we will most likely allow time for you to pick up lunch to-go along the way.

Can I reserve seats on the tour?+

Yes. Due to customer demand, we have a booking system for the following seats;

  • 4 front row seats – these give you unparalleled views out of the front windows, and the opportunity to disembark first at every stop. Our most popular seats.
  • 4 second row seats – many guests prefer to sit near the front of the coach, or be reassured that they will be seated together if they are a couple/group, both of which you get with this option. These seats also have a little more legroom than these front row seats. These are available on some tours only.
  • 2 extra legroom seats – these are situated near the back of the coach and have approximately 50% more legroom than regular seats. They are particularly suited to those who are tall, or like to stretch out.
  • 4 back row seats – these are ideal for groups who wish to sit together. Unlike on most other coaches we have removed the fifth/middle seat so the seats are spaced further apart, giving you more elbow room.

The price of the upgrades vary depending on which tour you are on, with prices between £2.50 and £22.50 per person. If they are available, upgrades will be given as an option when booking. Please note that it does not make any difference which side of the coach you sit on, so we don’t take requests for specific sides. The rest of our seats are allocated by your guide on arrival, as we feel that this is the fairest system of allocating seats. It is not possible to reserve window seats, or seats together if you are travelling as part of a group but, if you do wish to choose your seat, we would recommend arriving early at the bus stop (i.e. a few minutes before check-in closes). If you are unhappy with your seat please let your tour guide know and he will do his best to accommodate your requests, although obviously many guests would prefer a window seat so it is not possible for everyone to have these!

Will we have time to shop for souvenirs?+

This tour is focused on the world-class scenery of Skye and, as such, we do not have time to stop at any shops.  However, the tour starts and finishes in Somerled Square in the centre of Portree, which is surrounded by lots of quirky souvenir shops, galleries, bakeries, a fish & chip shop and a deli.  On most days you should have some time free before and after the tour to peruse these shops at your leisure.

What should I bring/wear?+

We would strongly recommend wearing hiking boots with ankle support (as a minimum you will need sturdy comfortable trainers/sneakers) as the ground, at the Quiraing in particular, is often muddy and slippery. We would also strongly recommend bringing a waterproof jacket (note that umbrellas are not appropriate on Skye – they just blow inside out and are rendered useless very quickly). In addition to these essentials we would suggest wearing layers, including a thick sweater/fleece option, and bringing a hat and gloves and warm jacket in your bag.

Even if it is a lovely day on Skye it is very often windy, which can mean that it feels cooler than the temperature would indicate. Also, the weather can be very changeable and it is not unusual to experience four seasons in one day. As we like to say in Scotland, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes”!

What is your cancellation policy?+

For our shore tours, the following cancellation charges shall apply (depending on the effective date of cancellation):-

a) Cancellation more than 7 days prior to the tour departure: You will be entitled to a full refund (note that any fees paid for seat upgrades are non-refundable)
b) Cancellation 72 hours to 7 days prior to the tour departure: You will be refunded 50% of the price paid (note that any fees paid for seat upgrades are non-refundable)
c) Cancellation less than 72 hours prior to the tour departure: You will not be entitled to a refund
d) If you need to cancel as your ship is unable to reach port we will refund the full cost of your tour.
